Walnut Ink Sample Book

This is one of my favorite techniques! Apply water soluble oil pastels directly to the paper. Use several colors in the same family and apply heavily and randomly. Don't worry if it looks "ugly" at this point (mine always does!). Apply a wash of walnut ink. Apply one coat only, don't go back over it a second time. Apply the walnut ink in one direction only. Because the oil pastel is waxy, it will cause the ink to bead on top--varying sizes of beads. When this dries, the beads form little "windows" of color that show through the walnut ink. Use bright colors, brighter than you might normally use because the color will lighten some because of the walnut ink wash.
